Question

14, (1 pt.) On one of the days mentored n te prevos qnston (#13). the sun in Sacramento (38.5'N)? 15. (1 pt.) On the same day as the previous question (13), you measure the noon zenith angle of the sun as being 50 south of directly overhead. What is your latitude? what s te noon are' mpi of Part lII-Global Insolation and Temperature The graph below shows the daily readings of potential insolation (dashed line) and actual insolation (solid line) for Sacramento on December 21, 2007. Use the graph to answer the questions that follow 800 700 600 500 400 200 100 16. (2 pts.) Why was there zero potential and actual insolation before 7.00 am and after 4:00 pm? 17. (1 pt.) Were there more clouds in the morning or in the afternoon on this day?

Explanation / Answer

The amount of solar energy that actually passes through the atmosphere and strikes a given area on the Earth over a specific time varies with latitude and with the seasons as well as the weather and is known as the insolation (incident solar radiation).

16. Since the sun would have risen after 7:00 AM , therefore there is zero insolation before 7:00 AM. Also, the sun sets nearly after 4:00 PM, again the insolation is zero after this time.

17. It is clearly visible from the graph that the actual insolation is less during the noon(least at 12:00 PM ) as compared to the morning. So, we can say that there were more clouds during noon as compared to the morning. As more will be the cloud cover lesser will be the actual insolation.

I hope you would have got the point. Comment here for further clarification.
