Need help with these questions please help. Vertical Structure of the Atmosphere eview Questions In your own words, describe how air pressure, density, and temperature vary with height in the tro- ere. The thickness of the troposphere varies from place to place and from day to day. What influences this thickness? . 3. We often hear the espression,"cold air sinks." If so, why isn't the colder air of the upper and middle troposphere steadily flowing down to the surface? In which case do you think you would measure a greater pressure change: moving a given distance horizontally or moving the same distance vertically? (As a reference, an average hurricane has a radius of approximately 600 km and a central pressure of 950 mb.) 4.

Explanation / Answer

1. Air pressure decreases moving up on the troposphere because the weight of overlying air column decreases.

As air pressure decreases density of air also decreases.

The major source of heating of atmosphere is the back radiation from earth surface. As we go up distance from the surface increases and thus temperature decreases.

2. Thickness of troposphere is greater at equator than pole because insolation is high at equator. Another reason is high centrifugal force at equator.

In winter the thickness of troposphere decreases because the cold air contracts and in summer air expand causing troposphere to get thicker.

Similarly in day time isolation is high so troposphere gets thicker in comparison to night.

3. Cold air sinks as they are denser but as they come down they get heated up and expand and move up again thus forming atmospheric cells.

4. Vertically the pressure changes are gradual because conditions are calm, but horizontally the local disturbances and climatic variations are high causing the pressure to change abruptly. Also wind systems causes the pressure to be stabilized horizontally.
