D climate are designated as Dfa or Dfb. Dfa are the humid continental with hot summer and Dfb are the humid continental with a very cold winter. There are no D climate in the southern hemisphere because there are no large landmasses in this hemisphere.

Continental subartic climate with severe winters are designated as either Dwd or Dfd. This climate is found only in eastern Siberia. The most notable example is the Verkhoyansk which is the most continental climate and is synomous with the extreme severe cold winter.

Polar climate consists of ET or EF. ET is the tundra climate which is characterized by having atleast one month whose average is above 0 degree celsius or 32 degree Fahrenheit. There is very little precipitation in this zone since the climate is dry and cold throughout the year.
