Question

A glacier is a large, slow-moving mass of ice typically found far away from the Earth's equator. However, scientists have found many rocks in Africa with scratches made by glaciers. What conclusion can be drawn from this evidence

? A-Africa is currently home to several types of glacier

s.B- Parts of Africa have once located farther away from the equator

.C- Humans are responsible for moving the rocks with glacial scratches to Afric

a.D- Glaciers can scratch rocks long after the glaciers have melted

. E-Glaciers only scratch rocks that are located near the equator.

Explanation / Answer

The scratches are usually made by a glacier by glacial abrasion on the bedrock made by blocks of rocks embedded in the ice as the glacier advances. These striations normally shows the direction of the glacier and suggests the ice flowed from a single central point. Evidence of past glaciation can be inferred from these striations. Using the directions of glacial striations, if we fit the continents together like a jig saw puzzle, we can see that South America, South Africa, India, Australia, all experienced glaciation at about the same time. Thus we can say B) Parts of Africa have once located farther away from the Equator, when Africa, South America, India, Antarctica and Australia were together known as Gondwanaland.
