Question

I need help with number 46 please.

45-48 The following problems give several ways to estimate the number of cells in your body. A cell is roughly a sphere 10 m in radius, where 1 um is 10-6 m. 45. Using the fact that the density of a cell is approximately the density of water and that water weighs 1 g/cm3, estimate the number of cells in your body. Estimate your volume in cubic meters by pretending you are shaped like a board. Pretending that cells are cubes 20 m on a side, what do you estimate the number of cells to be by this method? 46.

Explanation / Answer

Let the shape be a rectangular board.

we will take following dimensions, height = 1.8m , length = 0.35m, breadth = 0.18m based on average observations

then, volume = length x breadth x height = 0.35 x 0.18 x 1.8 = 0.1134 m3

cell volume = 20 x 20 x 20 = 8000um3 (since, volume of cube is side x side x side)

therefore,

number of cells in the body = body volume / cell volume

= 0.1134 / (8000 x 10-18) since, 1um = 10-6m and 1um3 = (10-6m)3 = 10-18m3

= 14,175 billion
