Question
Personnel selection. Suppose that 7 females and 7 male applicants have been successfully screened for 5 positions. If the 5 positions are filled at random from the 14 finalist , what is the probability of selecting. 3females and 2 males? 4 females and 1 male? 5femals? At least 4 females? Type probability of selecting 3 females and 2 males is approximately. (Type a decimal. Round to three decimal places.) The probability of selecting 4 females and 1 males is approximately. (Type a decimal. Round to three decimal places.) The probability of selecting 5 females is approximately. (Type a decimal. Round to three decimal places.) The probability of selecting at least 4 females and 1 males is approximately. (Type a decimal. Round to three decimal places.)Explanation / Answer
We have 7 male and 7 females for 5 positions.
A) Selecting 3 females.
We have 7*6*5=7P3 options and for selecting 2 males, we have 7P2 = 7*6 options
So total number of options we have = 7P3*7P2=(7^2)*(6^2)*5.
Now total options we can have is 14P5 = 14*13*12*11*10.
So probability=7P3*7P2/14P5 = 21/572=0.037.
B) similarly for 4 females and 1 male,
Probability=7P4*7P1/14P5= 7/143 = 0.049
C) for 5 females, we have Probability = 7P5/14P5 = 3/286 = 0.011.
D) for selecting atleast 4 females = P(selecting 4 females 1 male) + P(selecting 5 females) = answer(B) + answer(C) = 0.049 + 0.011 = 0.060 (approximately)
