Question

Personal Reactions to Change

1.      Think through your organizational experiences at school and at work when you have been a recipient of change. How have you typically responded to these changes? What were the factors that led to those responses?

To help you think about these questions, ask yourself the following concerning three to four such changes:

What was the change and how was it introduced?

What was the impact on you?

What was your initial reaction? Enthusiasm? “Wait and see” attitude? Ambivalence, due to conflicting reactions? Cynicism?

Did your attitudes change over time? Why or why not?

2.      Was there a pattern to your response?

      a.    Under what circumstances did you support the change? When did you resist? What can you generalize from these experiences?

      b.    If you experienced ambivalence, how did you resolve it and what happened to your attitudes toward the change once the ambivalent feelings were resolved?

3.      Overall, have your earlier experiences with change been largely positive, largely negative, or mixed?

Have these experiences colored your expectations and feelings toward change in the future?

Explanation / Answer

1. when i worked for an organization, suddenly the working hours were increased from 4 pm to 6pm suddenly. it is highly resisted decisions for most of the employees includes me. as an education institute, we works from 9am to 4pm, but when it increases to upto 6pm it became painful to all of us.

we were unable to focus on work in normal time and feel bad about extra time. we were not able to focus on the regular activities and personal activities. even the students were much uncomfortable about these timings and the absentees increased. the reason for incrasing the workings hours is, complete the curriculum and help the students to through exams. but when absentessm increases, how could we expect the desire output can be achieved?

personally i was not able to meet my family obligations, and no time to spend with my family and friends.

my initial reaction was uncomfortable about these timings, there is no question of wait and see in this.

b. no i do not support this kind of change, because it involves the complexity of minds of students. when they listen to classes from morning 9 to eveing 6 pm, different subjects which are difficult in nature, will make them more complicated and may not get all this in one day or in one semester. occassionally it may be acceptable, with proper reasons, but if it is a continuous practice, it must not encourage.

if i feel ambivalance, then i come to know what exactly the fact is, once i come to a clarity, then i will make next plans. with the confusion, i may not make right decision.

3. many things happens in our personal and professiona lifes, where some were expected and many were unexpected. i learn from all these and take the positives from all these, and practices them. when there are some negative changes, i accepts them as lessons and do not repeat in future.

yes, the expactions of future will be vary and changed whenever these kind of situations happened.
