Question

Energy, Efficiency and Power Extended Writing Task: Reducing the Bills ith energy prices increasing it is important that we don't waste electricity in our homes Name: Some appliances are very inefficient and many are left on 'standby' when they are not being used. Explain why using an inefficient television and keeping it on standby is a waste of money. Why leaving your telephone charger plugged in when you are not actually recharging your device is also wasteful. What Carbon Footprint' means and how it can be calculated What happens when the television or charger is left on 'standby An explanation of how our electricity bills are calculated An explanation of how you personally can help reduce your electricity bills. How does wasting electricity increase your carbon footprint? What else can you do to reduce your impact on the environment? . . Continue this task on lined paper and attach it behind this sheet.

Explanation / Answer

1) -Carbon footprint means the amount of green house gases emitted by an individual directly or indirectly or activities of an organization or community , primarily interms of carbon dioxide (in tonnes). It can be calculated by summing up all the output of green house gas emission , impacts etc.

2) - When the television or charger is on standby mode, they are not completely switched on. In this mode they still consume electricity but lesser than they actually consume when completely switched on. But older the appliance or the model, it will consume more elctricity than the new model in standby mode.

3) - Each month , the reading is taken of the meter in order to determine the amount of electricity one has used. Customers are informed of the meter inspection in advance. ONnce the reading of the meter is taken , it is subtracted by the reading of the previous month . The result from subtracting is then multiplied by a meter unit and the figure resulting is the amount you required to pay as the electricity bill.

4) - One can help reduce the elctricity bill by :-

a- by using clean energy like making use of solar energy.

b- avoiding use of elctricity when actually not required.

c- stop using old version of appliances which will consume extra electricity.

d- avoid using unneccessary electrical appliances

e- switching to LEDSs which is highly efficient and is avialable at low cost.
