Question

Energy from Fatty Acid Oxidation

Learning Goal:

To calculate the energy generated by the oxidation of a fatty acid.

Fatty acids yield more than twice as much energy per gram as carbohydrates. The image below shows the ?-oxidation pathway, a series of four reactions that oxidizes fatty acyl-SCoA to acetyl-SCoA. Note that the fatty acid is converted to fatty acyl-SCoA, an energy-requiring process, before it enters the ?-oxidation pathway. The hydrocarbon tail of the fatty acid is represented by CH2 atoms and the R group in acyl-SCoA.

Energy is generated from the electrons of FADH2 and NADH that enter the electron transport chain and from the passage of acetyl-SCoA through the citric acid cycle.

Question:

Assume that 2.5 ATPs are generated per NADH and 1.5 ATPs per FADH2. How many ATPs are generated from the FADH2 and NADH molecules from each repetition of the Beta-oxidation pathway?

Express your answer as an integer.

Step 1. A double bond is introduced by enzyme- catalyzed removal of two hydrogens from carbons2 and 3. The H H O R CH,CH-CH-CH_C-SCOA coenzyme FAD FAD is needed for this step FADH 1 R- CH2CH2-C SCoA+ CH3-C- SCOA Step 4. A carbon-carbon bond is broken to yield acetyl-SCoA and a chain- C-SCoA H- SCOA- shortened fatty acid. R-CHCH Further oxidation (repetition of Steps 1-4) H,o Step 3. The alcohol is oxidized to a ketone. The coenzyme NADt is used. Step 2. Water adds to the double bond to yield an alcohol. group NADH/H+ NAD+ R CH,CHCH-CH-C-SCOA

Explanation / Answer

Answer: 4 ATPs

For each repetition of the Beta-oxidation pathway, 2.5 ATPs per NADH and 1.5 ATPs per FADH2 are generated. In total, 4 ATPs are generated.
