Question
1, Which of the following statements about environmental heterogeneity is FALSE? (Environmental conditions are not homogeneous within a given community, and environmental heterogeneity influences community diversity.)
A. Indices of habitat complexity are good predictors of species diversity in many cases.
B. Grasslands have higher bird species diversity than forests.
C. Increased vertical structure leads to increased bird diversity in forests.
D. The death of canopy trees can increase species diversity in forests.
E. Burrowing animals can increase species diversity in communities by creating microhabitat variation in soil characteristics.
Explanation / Answer
The statement “B” that is the grasslands have higher birds species diversity than forests is a false statement as in forests we tend to see more environmental heterogeneity because it attracts a lot more organisms which change the various parameters thus having a very high impact on the environmental and making it more heterogeneous which in turn increases the diversity in birds.
Apart from this there can be a special case in which the statement “D” can be a false statement, as when the canopy trees dies then sunlight can penetrate more deeply and thus more number of shrubs and small trees can grow which can have high environmental heterogeneity thus can make this statement false.
