Question
5 total points) The average birthweight of babies for women living in poverty is 6.17 pounds. A neonatal program is set up to help increase the birthweight of these babies. A sample of 34 babies in this program reveals the average birthweight is 6.78 pounds with a standard deviation of 1.2 pounds. (a) (2 points) What's the probability of obtaining a birthweight this large if the true birthweight is 6.17 pounds? b) (3 points) Based on your answer in part (a), do you think the average birthweight for babies in the neonatal program is reasonably 6.17 pounds or do you think it's higher? Explain your answerExplanation / Answer
Ans:
a)As,sample size is sufficiently large,i.e. n>=30,we can use normal distribution.
z=(6.78-6.17)/(1.2/sqrt(34))
z=2.964
P(z>2.964)=0.0015
b)As,above probability is less than 0.05,so,it will be unusual that true weight is 6.17,hence we can conclude that true average birthweight for babies in the neonatal program is higher than 6.17.
