Question

HI..I need to answer a few questions for Statistics..I really appreciate your help!! A random selection of files from a student counseling center revealed the following reasons why college students seek services: Mental Health Issues: 25 Learning/School Issues: 15 Relationship Issues: 5 Other: 5 a) What does it mean to say the files were randomly selected? b) How would the researcher randomly select files? In other words, what does the process look like? c) What is the probability that if we pulled another student file from the counseling center the student would fall in the following categories: 1.Mental health issues 2.Learning/school/relationship issues

Explanation / Answer

a) The meaning of randomly selected files means the chance of each file to include in the sample is equal.

b) The procedure of selecting files randomly is as follows:

step 1) Number the files from 1 to N

Step 2 )Select random number of size n between 1 to N

Step 3) Select the files corresponding to the selected random number.

Such sample is called random sample .

c ) 1. We want to find the probability of student file drawn from the group of files fall in the Mental heath issues

Total files relating to the Mental Health Issues = 25

Total files = 25 + 15 + 5 + 5= 50

Therefore required probability = 25 / 50 = 5 / 10 = 0.50

2. We want to find the probability of student file drawn from the group of files fall in the Learning /school/relationship Issues

Total files relating to the Learning /school / relationship Issues = 15 + 5 = 20

Therefore required probability = 20 / 50 = 4 / 10 = 0.40
