The EPA was created in 1970. The Clean Air Acts and the enforcement work of the EPA have helped make the air in U.S. cities much cleaner and healthier. The federal EPA works with various state agencies to maintain healthy air quality. In Connecticut, the agency responsible for maintaining healthy air quality is the [A].

However, major air quality problems remain. SPM or suspended particulate matter is a serious health threat. This particulate matter, also called particulates, particles, or [B], enter human lungs and cause serious respiratory problems.

We previously looked at how coal burning power plants cause acid rain because the smokestacks of these plants emit sulfur gases that form acid in the atmosphere. This acid rains down on vegetation and into lakes and streams. Automobiles also contribute to this problem, because they emit a pollutant that is different than the sulfur from power plants. That pollutant, [C] combines with oxygen and hydrogen in the atmosphere to form [D], which also contributes to the acid rain problem.
