Question 20

Geostrophic wind flow occurs only in the upper atmosphere, not near the Earth's surface, because

diverging air and fair weather.

Explanation / Answer

Ans (1) Diverging air and cloudy weather.

Explanation - An anticyclone system has characteristics opposite to that of a cyclone. That is, an anticyclone's central air pressure is higher than that of its surroundings, and the airflow is counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. Anticyclones are usually characterized by low-level divergence and subsiding air. The absence of fronts means winds may be very light. Consequently, high-pressure areas are often associated with settled, dry and bright conditions. In summer, anticyclonesbring dry, hot weather. In winter, clear skies may bring cold nights and frost.

(2) Air moves only in straight line near equator.

Explanation - The Coriolis effect is greatest at the poles and zero at theequator because of the earth's spherical shape. If the surface of the rotating object is flatter, the Corioliseffect will be noticed more.

(3) Ananemometer

Explanation - The speed of that wind can bemeasured using a tool called an anemometer.
(4) True

Explanation - Warmer air is less dense than colder air because its molecules contain more inherent energy and can push each other out of the way. Colder air has less inherent energy so it packs up more and thus is denser. But one thing that need to be remember The atmosphere becomes less dense as altitude increases because there is less weight on the air molecules, making them less compressed. The air at a low altitude is denser because it is pressed down by all of the weight of all the air molecules above it.
