Question

For questions #16: You observe a series of waves in the Atlantic Ocean. You determine the following information: a. Wavelength (L) 18 m b. Wave height (H) 3 m . Wave period (T) 2s Use the above information to calculate and answer the following questions: 1. 2. 4. 6. What is the wave base for the above waves? Report your answer as a whole number and include units. Are the waves deep-water or shallow water waves? Calculate the wave steepness. Report your answer as a ratio (fraction)- reduce where possible. What is the speed of the wave? Report your answer as a whole number. Be sure to include units.

Explanation / Answer

Wave base is equal to half of the wavelength. Wave length = 18 m. Therefore wavebase = 18/2 = 9m If depth of the wave divided by length of the wave is less than 20, it is a shallow water eave. If it is greater than 20, it is a deep water wave. Depth / Length = 3/18 = 1/6 = 0.166 which is less than 20. This is a shallow water wave. Wave steepness is the ratio of wave height/ wave length. That is 6/18 = 1/6. The ratio is 1:6. Wave speed = Frequency x wave length. Frequency = 1/wave period. = 1/2. Wave Speed = (1/2) x 18 = 9 m/s. Therefore, wave speed = 9m/s.
