Question

The Anthropocene: Human Impact on the Environment

Introduction

In this assignment, you will open the link below and participate in a “Click and Learn” Activity.

http://media.hhmi.org/biointeractive/click/anthropocene/

You may begin by clicking on each impact topic in the left vertical menu. A description of man’s influence or impact on each category is explained.

Next, hover around on the diagram itself, and click to see what changes will occur. After each click, a graph will show at the bottom of the screen. The more diagram clicks, the greater the number of human changes are added, and the more graphs show at the bottom.

Assignment:

Select 3 human impacts you are most interested in learning about.

List the following information for how each impact affects ecosystems:

a. Describe how the human impact you selected affects the ecosystem.

b. Summarize some of the quantitative (graph) data that provide evidence of humans’ impact on the ecosystem.

c. Describe specific types of evidence people should look for in their own ecosystem to determine whether humans are changing the local environment.

d. Describe what you can do as an individual to limit your impact.

Explanation / Answer

Ans:

a. ecosystem refers the relationship between environment and all organisms. all animals and organisms are dependent on the environment directly or indirectly and human is one of them. human is differ from other organisms, it can reshape the earth's environment according to their need by constructing dams, industrial population, using fertilizer etc.

1. our atmosphere has unique quality than other planets which is ozone layer which saves us from the ultraviolet radiation of Sun and it has a oxygen gas around 21% which is obligatory for human life but human continuously producing carbon di oxide , carbon mono oxide like gases which is harmful for ozone layer by traffic pollution , indutsrial pollution, in last 50 years quantity of greenhouse gases increased rapidly which is reason behind the global warming

every animals or species having a unique role in our ecosystem but because of human activities many species got extrinct. speed of extinction of species rapidly incraese in last 50 years.

increasing population is the root cause of all problems , because we explore the environment for the necessary needs of the increased population and on that way we impactr the environment very badly.

for the huge population we need to food in much of amount thats why we used natural lands as a agriculture field which is also a loss of environment.

miniing and overfishing is another destruction in the nature process by human. for our needs we impacted our natural environment. and by maki9ng dams on the river we ends the natural ecosystem of the place.

and these activities rapidly increasing in last 50 years.

b. level of greenhouse gases increased in last 50 years.

carbon dioxide= from level 275 ppm to 400 ppm

methane= from level 1000 ppb to 1800 ppb

nitrous oxide = from level 285 ppb to 330 ppb

number of extinction rate of species increased from 300 to 800

human population of the world increase from 2 billion to 7 billion in just 50 years

agriculture runoff increased from 20 million tons to 120 million tons

agriculture land use increased from 30 % to 40 %

deforestation rate increased from 13 million km2 to 18 million km2

overfishing rate increased from 0 to 70 % in just 50 years.

dam constructing rate increased from 100 km3 water to 6000 km3 water

c. extinction of the species, new diseases originates day by day and ultraviolet radiation related patient and melting glaciers, water pollution, air pollution, and the less qualitative food from the agriculture fields are some evidence which proves human impact on environment.

d. we should make a effective and tough environment policy and some other laws which can protects our environment like chemical fertilizer must be prohibited in the agriculture field, we have to overcome carbon production, we should stop the agriculture runoff and make some laws for the dam constructiona and overfishing.
