There is a decrease in velocity of the p wave and S wave, This is due to the partial melting of the asthenosphere. The zone where the decease in velocity takes place is also called as the low velocity zone.

The velocity increases as we go down this layer as there are phase changes in the mineral due to the increasing lithostatic pressure. These phase changes result in high density minerals , resulting into higher P / S wave velocities being recorded.
