Earth's Interior
1) Explain three different ways that oceanic crust and continental crust are different. Where would you go to find very thick crust? Very Thin crust?
2) How do S waves allow us to determine that the mantle is solid?
3) Why is the earth's core one-sixth of Earth's volume but one-third of its mass?
Plate Tectonics
4) Why is oceanic lithosphere subducted while continental lithosphere is not?
5) Why would oceanic crust that is closer to the ridge that formed it always subduct under oceanic crust that is further from the ridge that formed it?
Most answers it all
Explanation / Answer
density of oceanic crsut and continental crust is 2.9 g/cm^3 & 2.7g/cm^3 respectively.
continental crust is older than oceanicc crust
and is morer felsic than oceanic crust
since s waves can travel through mantle and get detected by seismometers unlike liquid cire, we can say that mantle is solid
It is composed of iron , which is denser
oceanic lithosphereis subducted under continental ithosphere as it hsa higer density, in other case, other case both plate have sem density hence subduction does not occur
denser layer subducts below other. recent oceanic crust is denser than older hence, denser subduct below
