Question
For a type of tissue the probability of a randomly selected cellbeing in a particular stage of the cell cycle is given by thefollowing table which describes the sample space:Cell cycle Probability
Interphase 0.5
Prophase 0.1
Metaphase 0.05
Anaphase 0.2
Telophase 0.15
Suppose you examine 100 cells at random from this tissue.
A. On average what proportion of cells would you expect to be inmetaphase?
I got this to be 5 out of the 100 due to the .05 probability
B. What is the probability of seeing at least one metaphase?
This I am having problems with. I know there is a probability of.95 that it will not be in metaphase. Please help!
Explanation / Answer
However, part B is a binomial probability question - so letslook at that.
1 - Probability of 0 = probability of at least onemetaphase.
Probability of 0 = .95 ^ 100. = .005921
So the probability of seeing at least one metaphase is.994079
