Question
There was once a farmer who, as part of his route to town, used a rickety old boat to cross a wide river. One day he took his dog and went to town just to buy corn. However, in addition to buying corn, he bought a goose that he intended to take home and use to start raising geese. (The farmer was no fool; he already had another goose.) But he also knew that his boat was not reliable, it could handle only himself and one of the other three things he had with him. He feared that if left alone, the dog would eat the goose or the goose would eat the corn. How could he get himself and everything else across the river safely?
Explanation / Answer
Since the dog will not eat the corn, the farmer will first leave the dog and corn and will take the goose over the river. Then the farmer will go back alone and get back for the dog who will be taken across the river. The farmer will return with the goose, leave the goose and return with the corn. The farmer will take the 3rd trip alone and will take the goose across the river.
