5.3 Data by Mazze et al. [1971] deal with the preoperative and postoperative creatinine clearance (ml/min) of six patients anesthetized by halothane: PROBLEMS 143 Patient 4 6 Preoperative 110 10161 73 143 118 Postoperative 149 105 162 93 143 100 (a) Why is the paired t-test preferable to the two-sample t-test in this case? (b) Carry out the paired t-test and test the significance of the difference. (c) What is the model for your analysis? (d) Set up a 99% confidence interval on the difference (e) Graph the data by plotting the pairs of values for each patient.Explanation / Answer
Ans:
a)As,the samples i.e patients are the same for both processes preoperative and postoperation,so samples are dependents,so paired t-test will be appropriate .
(t -test for Indpendent samples,where use two independent group or samples)
b)
Test statistic:
t=(-24.33-0)/(42.21/sqrt(6))=-1.41
degree of frredom=6-1=5
p-value(two tailed)=0.2176
Assume significance level=0.05
As,p-value>0.05,we fail to reject null hypothesis.
There is sufficeint evidence to suggest that there is no significant diffrence in means for preoperative and postoperative process.
t* for 99% CI and df=5 is 4.032
99% Confidence interval:
=-24.33+/-4.032*(42.21/sqrt(6))
=24.33+/-69.48
=(-45.15,93.81)
As,confidence interval includes 0,so it indicates there is no significant difference in mean of the preoperative and postoperative process.
