Root growth measurements: After one week remove the towels with the seeds from the growth chambers. Carefully unfold the towels and look at the seeds. Examine each seed. Create a table in which you describe what each seed looks like. Divide the table between control and experimental groups.
Next measure the length of the longest root growing from the each seed. Write down your results and calculate and average root length for the experimental and control groups. Create a graph that compares the length of the root between
Results: In your results you should have the table from the observation chambers and a bar graph the compares the average root length of the control group and acid group seeds.
1 – Did the acid solution affect the rate of germination? The root length?
2- What implications do your results have for acid deposition in a forest ecosystem?

Explanation / Answer
Yes the acid solution affected the rate of germination, because
1) Low pH will affect the activity of all the enzymes in the plant and as a result some will stop functioning
2) Low pH affects the availability of plant nutrients when a plant is growing in soil.
3) Also ,the acid or alkali are just too corrosive to enable survival of the plants.
Effects of acid deposition in a forest ecosystem
1. During acidic rainfall, water soaks into the forest soil and it increases the acidity of the soil. Those soils that have less buffering capacity are more susceptible to the other harmful effects of acid rain.
2. Moreover by increasing the acidity in soil, acid rain leaches cations like potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium from the soil and washes them away, making these nutrients unavailable to plants and this process reduces the fertility of the soil. When acid rain removes those nutrients completely, the soil is unable to support plant life. Acid rain also releases substances like aluminum, which are toxic to plants.
