Question
Researchers wondered whether the size of a person's brain was related to the individual's mental capacity. They selected a sample of 3 females and 3 males and measured their MRI counts and IQ scores.
Treat the MRI count as the explanatory variable. Compute the linear correlation coefficient between MRI count and IQ for both the males and the females. Do you believe that MRI count and IQ are linearly related?
The linear correlation coefficient for females is _____ .
The linear correlation coefficient for males is _______ .
The data is reported below
138
Females MRI Females IQ Males MRI Males IQ 951,546 138 965,355 132 857,781 135 924.060 138 856,473 141 1,038,438138
Explanation / Answer
Calculated by using the "correl" function in excel
Both of these correlation values are very less and close to 0 which means there is very less linear correlation between MRI count and IQ for both males and females.
Also, by plotting scatter plot between MRI count and IQ for both males and females, we can say that there is no linear correlation as the data points are not falling on a line and are very much scattered.
