Question
Researchers wanted to examine the effect of working with a toxic chemical on the incidence of brain cancer. In this study, cases and controls were recruited from a factory where some workers were exposed to the chemical in question due to the nature of their job and some were not exposed to the chemical. Information was then obtained on medical history, family history, job exposure status, and other environmental exposures through an interviewer-administered questionnaire. Four different interviewers were used to interview both cases and controls. Interviewers were blinded to disease status. After the study was done, it became clear that one of the interviewers added to the exposure status question by explaining where the workers might have been exposed to the chemical at work, whereas the other three interviewers read the question verbatim. Which type of bias does this exemplify?
Explanation / Answer
Answer to the question)
The bias here originates due to the interviewer who explained the question or manipulated the question , by relating it to the research topic directly for the subject under study. This kind of bias is basically generated by the inerviewers perception
Thus the bias originated by the wrong phrasing of the question by the interviewer results in "interviewer bias"
there is not problem , in the sampling process or the research design , but while getting the response from the subjects , where 4 interviewers are hired to do this task to avoid interviewer bias, one of the interviewer phrases the question differently which consequently leads to biased outcomes or responses. Thsu this type of bias generated because of the interviewer is called "Interviewer Bias"
