MARITAL STATUS AND AGE A study was conducted at a Daytona Beach nightclub to examine whether or not there was a link between age and marital status. A total of 140 customers at the nightclub were surveved and asked about confidential questions regarding their age and what their marital status was. 49 of the customers were at least 30 years of age, the rest were under 30 105 of the customers were single, the rest were married. 21 of customers were 30 or over in age and married. 1. Use marginal probabilities to comment on the age of customers attending the nightclub 2. Use marginal probabilities to comment on the marital status of customers attending the nightclub 3. W hat is the probability of randomly selecting a customer of the nightclub and finding that he at she is under the age of 30 and single? 4.If a randomly selected customer of the nightclub is under the age of 30, what is the probability that he or she is single? 5. Is marital status independent of age? Explain carefully

Explanation / Answer

from above given data:

below is table containing frequency of different levels

dividing each cell with 140 ; blow is the joint probability distribution of age and marital status:

1) from above below is marginal probabilities of age of customers:

from above we can see that proportion of people below 30 years of age has higher probability(0.65) to attend the nightclub in comparison to people above 30 for which probability is 0.35.

2) marginal probabilty of martial status:

from above :   we can see that proportion of people single has higher probability(0.75) to attend the nightclub in comparison to people who are married for which probability is 0.25.

3) probability of under 30 and single =0.55

4)probability of single given under 30 =0.55/0.65 =0.8462

5) as P(single) =0.65 is not equal to probability of single given under 30 ; therefore they are not independent.
