Explanation / Answer

Q. Solid wastes defined by RCRA may include wastes in the forms of liquids and gases?

ANS- The resource conservation and recovery act 1976 created a framework for hazardous and non hazardous waste management programs. Solid waste means any garbage sludge from a waste water traetment plant and water supply treatment plant or air pollution control facility and other discarded material resulting from commercial, industrial, mining, agriculture or community activities leave behind some kind of waste it also include waste which are in liquid or semi solid or contain gaseous material.

Q. -Clean Water Act provides a "Cradle to Grave" system for controls of hazardous wastes?

ANS- The clean water act is a law regulated in United States regarding water pollution. Its main concern is to maintain the water quality in terms of chemical composition physical and biologically free from toxics.

'Cradle to grave' regulatory programe concerns international shipment of hazardous wastes generators who ship hazardous wastes abroad must still prepare manifest identifying transport and designating main and alternate disposal sights but there is no tracking of this waste beyond USA border.

Q.-If the leachate from the Toxicity Characteristics Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test contains any contaminants in concentrations that exceed regulatory levels, then the waste is a hazardous waste by virtue of its toxicity

ANS- The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure is designed to stimulate the leaching waste will undergo if disposed off in a sanitary landfill this only consider sanitary landfill only

TCLP extracts contain one of the TC constituents in an amount equal to or exceeding the consentration specified in CFR

Q. -Identify the role of each of the following components of a solid waste management system

Ans 4.1) Collection ; it is not only gathering of solid waste and recycling of material but also the transport of these material, to the location where the heap of garbage is located.

2) Transfer Stations : the waste is tranferre dfrom a smaller collection vehicle to a larger transport equipment. Then the waste is transferred over long distances at the disposal sites

3)Recycling ; converting waste material into a useful new material and objects that can save material and help lowering green house emissions thereby reducing air pollution water pollution recycling is a key component of modern waste reduction and is third component of reduce, reuse, recycle waste heirarchy.

4) Composting ; organic matter which is decomposed in a process called composting in this process organic matter are recycled which is otherwise considered waste product

5)Landfills ; are the area where land dumping is done it involves mass dumping of waste onto a site it is then compacted by large machines landfill posses the threat of land pollution can intoxicate ground water usually these landfills are covered by walls which hides the mounts of debris .

6) Landfill closure :all the hazardous activities ans waste must eventually stops their treatment, storage and disposal activites. closure is the time when these activities are no longer accepts hazardous waste.
