In a 5x7 matrix, linear independence is impossible? 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 so I think you're stuck with free variables.. I wouldn't know how many pivots it needs though, sorry!
