Question

4. Explain why the sky is always dark on the Moon, why a hammer and feather drop at the same rate of acceleration, and why craters so well preserved on the Moon, but not on the Earth? The answer is the same for all of these.

5. Are the orbiting: a) Moon, b) International Space Station, and c) GPS satellites essentially in freefall around the Earth? Explain.

6. How were maria on the Moon formed? What is their composition? Does Earth have similar rocks? Why are the maria or seas inferred to be younger than the highlands on the Moon?

Explanation / Answer

4) the gravity of the moon is weak to keep the gas molecules with in its field so moon do not have an atmosphere, so the activities like wind is absent on moon surface which helps to preserve the marks on moon surface as it is. due to the lack of atmosphere there is no atmospheric drag so hammer and feather drop at same rate of accelaration.

5)yes. when an object which is not supported by any external links, falls under the gravity of another object is known as the free fall, the orbit around the earth is a path of consant free fall, so literally moon is constantly falling to earth. in the same way, earth and moon are in free fall to sun.

6)Lunar maria are formed by the volcnic erruption and it is a large area of basaltic plain. they are rich in iron and so less reflective in nature and appears as dark regions to the naked eye. basalt is formed by the rapid cooling of lava on the surface the moon or earth.basalt is a common rock that found on earths surface also formed by the volcanic activities. the rocks formed through volcanic activities will be comparitively younger to the surrounding, because they are formed after the formation of the surface and other features on moon or a planet, so the maria on moon surface is younger than the highlands on moon.
