Question

2) Your company has been contracted to paint 11 gasoline tanks both inside and outside. Each tank has dimensions of 21ft in length by 5ft in diameter. The paint for the outside comes in 15 liter containers and costs $45per container while the paint for the inside comes in 10 liter containers and costs $75 per container. If each has a coverage of 31 square feet per gallon,
(a) How much money will be needed to cover the cost of paint?
(b) How many cubic meters of water can we store in all the tanks?
(c) If we get a bonus of 5 cents per gallon if we paint them one day before deadline, how much will that bonus be?

Explanation / Answer

First we need to find the square feet of the outside and inside for a single tank. Note that the outside and inside will have the same surface area to cover. Given the dimensions we know that there are 4 side that are 21ft*5ft and 2 sides that are 5ft*5ft So the surface area of a single tank = (4*(21ft*5ft))+(2*(5ft*5ft) = 420ft^2 + 50ft^2 = 470ft^2 Multiply this number by the amount of tanks 470ft^2 * 11 = 5170ft^2 Divide 5170ft^2 by 31ft^2 to get the amount of containers needed for the outside and inside. 5170ft^2/31ft^2 = 166.8 paint containers needed a) containers * cost per container (outside) = 167 * $45 = $7515 + containers *cost per container (inside) = 167 * $75 = $12525 $7515 + $12525 = $20,040 b) For (cubic meters) of water find the volume of the containers First convert the dimension from feet to meters 21ft X 1m/3.28ft = 6.4m 5ft X 1m/3.28ft = 1.52m Then compute area by multiplying all dimension (6.4m*1.52m*1.52m) = 14.79m^3 Multiply this by 11 for number of tanks 14.79 * 11 = 162.7 m^3 of water c) convert the amount of liters use to gallons outside 15liters per container * 167 containers = 2505 liters inside 10liters per container * 167 container = 1670 liters 2505 liters * 1gallon/3.78liters = 663 gallons 1670 liters * 1gallon/3.78liters = 442 gallons 663 + 442 = 1105 gallons 1105 gallons * $.05 = $55.25 bonus
