Question
What do you think of these two ideas? Do you agree or disagree and explain why for each question.
1. Pseudoscience are beliefs or practices claimed to be scientifically proven to be a fact but in reality they are not. People basically just assume it is true. Pseudoscience can not be scientifically proven, cannot be tested, or lacks evidence to support it. Their is no scientific basis. This differs from science because science overall is a scientifically proven fact. The first thing that I thought about when I started reading about pseudoscience was back in 2012 when it was claimed that our world would end due to a large-scale of natural disasters. Yes, earlier that year we did have some earthquakes but, I never believed that their would be a set date for the end of the world. How possibly can someone say when the world will end? Their was actually even a movie that came out based on the end of the world that same year. Many people actually believed the event would happen. Besides the earthquakes we did have, their was no scientific evidence that could strongly prove that the world would end. Another example is the accuracy of polygraphs. Polygraphs, lie detector tests follow under the category of hypnosis, both used in the field of psychology. I do not believe their is a way to accurately be certain that someone is telling the truth or lying and I do believe lie detector tests can be wrong too. It is not scientifically proven that these tests are accurate either.
2. Pseudoscience is essentially made up from claims or theories that say that they are scientific, but they are not. These claims and theories do not have credible evidence to support these views. As a result, people can make theories and claim it is science for just about any topic they desire. This is pretty much the polar opposite of the science that we have been been discussing all semester because all of the science that we have looked at has numerous sources for where scientists got their information from, results from various testing, and extensive documentation during tests. In other words, the science we have looked at has lots of evidence that supports the claims. I think one of the most talked about forms of pseudoscience today is that organic foods are better for you. People accept the notion that organic foods are better for you because they are organic. However, there is no real evidence that suggests organic foods are better for you than non-organic foods. In fact, there have been numerous articles published about farmers that are able to get their foods labeled as "organic," even though they are not truly organic.
Explanation / Answer
1. I am against the notion that the end of the world should be considered as a pseudoscience because we had various mass extinction events events during the history of earth and most of these extinction events were caused due to tectonic forces. The only probably reason that we can use to say the end of the earth as a pseudo scientific belief is that we don’t lived through that time when these events happened and hence we can never know the extent of damage that these tectonic incidents cas have on human and in nature. Apart from this if we talk about the prediction of the date for such type of event then also we can use plate tectonics theory and lithospheric rebound theory to know about the time range when such type of event will happen. The time range can be of 100-1,000 years which looks very much for human being but in geological time scale this is a very small quantity of time.
2. For me the concept of organic farming is a greenwashing technique which is used to recovery more money from the consumer by selling similar sort of products. Greenwashing is a term used by various companies to promote their products by showing them more environmental friendly, made from more sustainable processes and which won’t have that much negative environmental affects but in actually almost all of the money is used in showing a company green without actually doing anything green and hence organic farming can be considered as a hoax used to change some extra bucks from the consumers and hence showing organic goods are good for health is a complete pseudoscience.
