Question

Question 1:
With one method of acceptance sampling, a sample of items israndomly selected without replacement, and the entire batch isrejected if there is at least one defect. The MedtymePharmaceutical Company has just manufactured 2500 aspirin tablets, and 2% are defective because they contain too much or too littleaspirin. If 4 of the tablets are selected and tested, what isthe probability that the entire batch will be rejected??

Question 2:
                         10-mgAtrovastatin         Placebo
Headache                       15                          65
NoHeadache                 17                           3

If 1 of the 100 subjects is randomly selected, find the probabilityof getting someone who was given a placebo or did not have aheadache.

Explanation / Answer

Question 1: To simplify calculations, we find the probability that the entirebatch will not be rejected first, and then find the complement. For all 4 tablets to be not defective, the probability is0.98*0.98*0.98*0.98 = 0.922. Thus, the probability that the entirebatch will be rejected is 1 - 0.922 = 0.078. Question 2: The only group excluded here are the people who had a headache andwere not given a placebo, that is, the 15 subjects. Everyone else, the 85 other people, were either given a placebo or did not have aheadache. Thus the probability is 85/100 = 0.85.
