EXERCISE 47 PROBLEMS-PARTn The following questions are based on Map T-11, the "Whitewater, Wisconsin" quadrangle (scale 1:62,500; contour interval 20 feet: dotted lines represent 10-foot contours), and Map T-27b, a shaded-rel "Kettle Moraine State Forest et map showing a portion of this area in greater detail. The irregular high ground of ," running diagonally from the lower left to the right center of the '34'N, 88 35'59 W). The region map, is a terminal moraine left by a Pleistocene ice sheet (42"51 northwest of the terminal moraine was once covered by the ice. The region in the southeast comer of the map is the edge of the glacial outwash plain. 1. (a) What are the landforms shown as a series of small hills near the upper left cormer of the map? (Map T-27b will be especially helpful here.) (b) How did they form? From which direction did the ice sheet advance toward what is now the terminal moraine? Be specific. 2. (a) From to (b) What evidence on the map led you to your answer? 3. Provide one explanation of the formation of the cluster of small lakes about I mile (1.6 km) n ast of La Grange (near the southern margin of the map). 4. (a) The straight blue lines are artificial channels being used to drain swampy areas. Suggest one explanation of the formation of these swamps. (b) What is the evidence that these drainage channels are having their intended result? 328 Copyright 0 2017 Pearson Education, Inc.

Explanation / Answer

1. a.These small hill like features are ridges . since these have elongated contours on one side. The contours formed by a ridge are long , narrow and elliptical in shape.

b.ridges are formed when there is tectonic upliftment or process of mountain formation.

2 a. The direction of terminal moraine movement is from SW TO NE i.e from left lower side to right central side.

b.we can say from the map by seeing that it spreads out to right central side while it is a narrow patch over sw or lower left hand side.

3. The formation of such lakes is due to presence of ice which melts and gives away small lakes or if water could not drain due to melting away of ice it simply forms a lakes

4.a. These swamps are formed due to glaciers and the debris brought by the glaciers. When the ice melts it forms a ridge of material along the valley centre, and the melted water moves away and form swamp like areas. These occours due to lack of drainge. so hence these artifical drainage will be useful.

b. Yes we can say that these are showing the intended results because there is no formation of lakes over the upper region where as on lower side we can see a no of lakes .these is due to lack of drainge.
