Astronomy Ranking Task Luminosity of Stars Exercise #1 Description: Imagine you are comparing the five electric hot plates (A - E) of different sizes and temperatures. The tempcrature of cach hot plate is indicated by a shade of gray such that the lighter the shade of gray, the higher the temperature of the hot plabe A. Ranking instructions: Rank the surface area (from largest to smallest) of the hotplates. Ranking Order: Largest 1234 Or, all the hotplates have the same surface arca Carefully explain your reasoning for ranking this way: Smallest (indicate with a check mark) - B. Ranking instructions: Rank the temperature (from hottest to ooldest) of the hotplates. Ranking Order: Hottest24 Or, all the hotplates have the same temperature Carefully explain your reasoning for ranking this way: Coldest indicate with a check mark) Copyright 2005 Center for Astronomy Education (CAE) University of Arizona

Explanation / Answer

Answer A

Surface area ranking order

Largest A>B=C=E>D smallest

B,C, E have the same surface area because of equal sizes.

Answer B

Hottest A=E>C>B=D coolest

Color of A and E is same thats why they have equal temperature and similarly B and D have same.

Answer C

If we look at surface area order then a have highest area and also a have highest temperature hence dissipate highest and then B,C,E have same surface area then temperature order will be the order for energy output and D have the lowest both surface area and temperature.

So order for energy output is

Highest A>E>C>B>D LOWEST
