Question
3. A professor is interested in whether there is a difference in counseling students’ statistics competency scores among 1) those who have never taken any statistics course, 2) those who have only taken an undergraduate statistics course, 3) those who have taken COUN 503, and 4) those who have taken an advanced statistic course while working on a Ph. D. The professor gathers information from a random sample of students and obtains the statistics competency scores. The scores are normally distributed.1) 2) 3) 4)

b. Identify H0 and Ha for this study.
c. Conduct the appropriate analysis.
d. Should H0 be rejected? What should the researcher conclude?
Explanation / Answer
a. What statistical test should be used to analyze these data? You use the One way ANOVA since you are trying to find the difference between the means of the groups b. Identify H0 and Ha for this study. H0: There is no significant difference in the means of the competency score of counseling students in the four categories. Ha: the alternative hypothesis would be that there is a significant difference in the means of the competency score of the counseling students. c. Conduct the appropriate analysis. As far as conducting the analysis , you would have to use the appropriate statistical program (ex my college used SPSS) and put the information in, hit analyze then compare means then one way ANOVA and you should get a table containing the information needed. I dont have the program since its expensive d. Should H0 be rejected? What should the researcher conclude? to decide whether the null should be rejected you would have to look at you obtained F statistic(from the anova table) and compare it to the critical F statistic, which you can obtain using the reference table in your textbook by using the alpha level and degrees of freedom. Also did the problem specify the alpha level as you will need this to solve although usually alpha is 0.05 If F obt is greater than or equal to F crit we reject the null hypothesis.
