Question
8. On an exam with a of M = 82, you obtain a score
of X = 86.
a. Would you prefer a standard deviation of s 2 or
s 10? (Hint: Sketch each distribution and find the
location of your score.)
b. If your score were X = 78, would you prefer s 2
or s 10? Explain your answer.
I am confused with all of this. I don't quite understand which one I would prefer as I do not understand the formula.
Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Convert score to Z score, you want a high z score. (Score-Mean) / SD score =86 mean =82 4/SD=? 2.0 if SD=2 0.4 if SD=10 2.0>0.4 you want SD=2 (Score-Mean) / SD score =78 mean =82 -4/SD=? -2.0 if SD=2 -0.4 if SD=10 -0.4>-2 you want SD-10 If you are still not convinced you want the HIGH z score, convert it to a percentile! You will see how lucky you are to have the choice!!
