Question
2. Based on 40 samples of size 3 during a period of control, the average downward pressure a company's plastic pipette can tolerate before cracking is X (mean of means)=184.6 lb and S=2.31lb. the lower spec limit is 170.0 lb.
3. IN problem 2, susppose a customer want to purchase a large order of pipettes an the lower spec limit is 180.0 lb. the company can adjust the porcess mean upward in order to get the customer's business, although the Populate standard deviation will not change. what is the smallest value approximately, of population mean for which there hardly ever will be a nonconforming pipette.
Please help solve question 3. this is taken from the book A Quick Course in Statistical Process Control by Mick Norton.
I am having a hard time understand things. but if you can explain it to me then i am sure to understand it. I am taking on line college courses and my teacher seems to be unreachable for help.
thanks so much

Explanation / Answer
I don't think the person before did anything. But from my interpretation of the problem: If we just want to shift the minimum up 10, we can shift the mean up 10 to 194.6. Otherwise we'd need to have a rule, 3 standard deviations, 4 etc. Just make the mean 180+3*2.31 or 180+4*2.31 etc. Mail me with any questions.
