sobar Maps

Isobar maps are maps of air pressure that connect areas with the same pressure with lines called isobars (iso- means "same" and "bars" refers to the measure of air pressure in millibars). The following image is of an isobar map of the United States. Use this map to answer the following questions. Add the answers to the attached answer worksheet and submit this worksheet for grading using the Assignments Tool in ACE.

What is the direction of wind movement (clockwise or counter-clockwise) coming out of the high pressure cell in the western United States?

What is the direction of wind movement (clockwise or counter-clockwise) coming out of the low pressure cell in the eastern United States?

What is the predominant direction of wind movement (south to north, north to south, west to east, east to west) across the entire United States?

Explanation / Answer

In the western USA the isobars are seems to form the high pressure zone which is known as the divergence zone where air gets diverged from the center to the outer flank its motion will be anticlockwise in direction or counter clockwise in direction.

In the eastern USA the isobars are seems to form the low pressure zone which is known as the convergence zone where air gets converged into the center from the outer flank so its motion will be clockwise in direction or counter

In the middle of the usa or in the inland region the western highs air circulation(anticlockwise) right limb causes motion of air towards the south to the norh and similarly in the eastern lows the air circulation(clockwise) left limb causes motion of air in the south to north so total movement of the air is the south to north
