Question
11. After a large snowstorm, the newspaper reports the water equivalent of the precipitation for Brandon, Manitoba to be 23 mm. If we assume all of the precipitation fell as snow, then how many cm of snow did the city receive? 12. Each of the four illustrations to the right represents the wind flow pattern around an area of surface high pressure or surface low pressure in either the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Hemisphere For each, indicate whether the surface pressure system is low or high and whether the system is located in the Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere 13. Answer the following questions using the illustration to the right (a surface weather map in the Northern Hemisphere) 1016 1028 1024 a) What is the pressure at point Q? b) At point D the wind would most likely bes blowing from the c) Would the wind at point S most likely be blowing from the southeast, southwest, northeast, or northwest? d) Would you expect stronger winds at point P or point Q? Explain. e) Should the air above the H be rising or sinking?Explanation / Answer
11.?
12. First of all, we should know that the wind blows according to coriolis force in Northern hemisphere and in Southern hemisphere.
A. Here wind is blowing anticlockwise when it is high pressure in southern hemisphere.
B. Here wind is blowing anticlockwise when it is low pressure in northern hemisphere
C. Here wind is blowing clockwise when it is high pressure in northern hemisphere
D. Here wind is blowing clockwise when it is low pressure in southern hemisphere
13.
A) it is in between the 2020 and 2016milibar(mb)
For answer B, C, D, E, it is necessary to know that winds are always blown from high pressure area to low pressure area because when air get heated then it expands and then it rises whereas when air cools then it become heavy and sink down. And we know that when warm air rises then cool air will replace it that's why air blows from high pressure(low temperature) to low pressure (high temperature).
B) The wind mostly blown from North West
C) The wind will be blown from North East
D) The wind will be stronger at P because they are exactly in the middle of High pressure and Low pressure. Whereas the Q is away from High pressure and Low pressure hence wind will be weaker at Q.
E) when the air get warmer it rises and create low pressure area and when air cools then it sinks forming high pressure area.
