Question 8: Wetlands and Floods (Points: 8 Consider the following image taken of the wetlands at the Heard Science Museum and Nature Sanctuary in McKinney Wetlands are defined by their periodic or perpetual saturation, their water-adapted foliage, and their poorly- drained soils suited to anaerobic (low-to-no oxygen) conditions a) Describe the position of the water table. b) Suggest two situations that might cause this marsh to disappear: one natural cause and one cause related to human activities. Wetlands commonly exist along the borders of streams in either the zone of transportation or at the mouth (where they may also border the ocean). How might these wetlands aid in preventing flooding? You must give two reasons c) Bonus (Points: 4) Why do most of the world's largest rivers drain toward passive continental margins? (You must be complete to get the bonus).

Explanation / Answer

a) the position of the water table can be defined by knowing actually the oritation of the water table only. so first we make it clearly understand about the water table. so water table can be defined as it is the upper surface of the saturation zone.it is that section of the ground surface where the pores and the fractures present in the ground is get saturated with the water and form a storehouse for this. now here the position of the water table will be lie just beneath to the wetlands because here the saturaion is present only there and thus create the saturation with water all over the surface beneath wetland.

------------------------------------------------------------

b) there are many factors which are directly and indirectly influence the depletions and marsh of the region. it may be by the virtue of natural process or by the human activity. we need to give one cause from both these factors so lets have with the human activity.

as the consumptions of the water and pollution and contamibation has increased too much. due to this the water is polluted too much and form the waste water which is not suitable to use. due to human activities the global warming rises and make the water to evaporate or seeps down to great depth in the ground. this make drought like situations and make the region marsh for the water table as well/

now the natural process is the earthquake, geothermal energy productions. this make the water escape out from the one region to the other region and create the marsh to that perticular region where the natural cause is taking place.

---------------------------------------------

c) as we know that wetland is a type of land that is saturated with the water on the basis of either permanently or seasonally.it is the region of small or large land which is covered by the salt water r fresh water. but these wetlands have the abilities to prevent the flood as it is happens due to the following facts and reasons stated below-

1) the wetlands are the land which are having the capacity to absorb the water from the stream boundaries. in the case of the overflow the wetland absorbed it and send to fill the ground water table and thus minimize the chance of flood in the region.

2) it make the flow and the passage of the stream more efficiently which make the drainout easily in the heavy flood like situation. this create the preventions of the flood. the wetland have the greenish section which also tae some part of the flood as a source of consumptions and thus make it possible to attain the flood preventions.

---------------------------------------------

=> it drain to the passive side due to the fact that the region is a wetland and have the shallow region of the continental geography. this means the saturation of the water with the ground pores is more there and thus passage to there the water will be utilized as the refill of the water table and make the region safe from the flood situations.
