Week 5 Hands-on and/or Reflection Assignment: 2 page/500 word minimum; 3 sources minimum in APA format and at least 2 digital pictures
Easy Air pollution Indicators Lab
This is a longer term project and you will need a few weeks to complete it successfully. This is an easy way to have a look at air pollution. This experiment shows us what we are breathing every day. For this assignment complete the experiment and include a lab report. Go to Lab Report to see how to write a scientific lab report; remember that are still using APA format and are required to have at least TWO supporting sources as well as 2 digital pictures.
What you need for your project:
6 Index cards
Masking tape
Petroleum jelly
Camera
A note book
Felt-tipped pen
How to do this project:
*note, complete these steps 1-4 in duplicate. i.e. you will have two sets of three cards (6 total cards) (each group will have a double card)
Start with 3 of your index cards and smear a thin layer of petroleum jelly on it.
Mark the cards a, b and c.
Tape card "a" inside your house on a wall or something in your room for instance, as your control. (control is the group in an experiment where nothing is done. The control is left alone so that the other variable may be compared to it)
Tape the other two (card b and card c) onto surfaces outside. If you live close to a busy road, on your postbox would be a good place. Choose a different location for the other one.
Now you have to check your cards everyday for at least four weeks.
Make a note of the amount of particulate matter (dust, odd bits and pieces of material, pollen and other small particles that float in the air) that gathered on each card.
Please take a few pictures (2) of your experiment and include them in your report. You are required to include pictures to avoid loosing points in your assignment.
Question to answer as you interpret the results and to include in your lab report:
What happened?
Of what is it an indication?
On which card were the most particulate matter collected?
Can you explain it?
What happened to the cards taped inside your house?
Was it completely clean?
Was it cleaner than the ones outside?
Why do you think the inside one was not completely clean?
Explanation / Answer
Take three index cards and rub petroleum jelly in the central portion of these cards. Place these cards in three different positions. The first card is placed inside the house on the walls, second card will be on the park bench and the third card is placed on the bus stop. Then after a week observe the impurities struck on the card and take photographs. Then compare the cards placed outside with the cards placed inside your house. Now compare the size, shape and number of largest particles in the card 2 and record your observations in a notebook. Similarly record observations for the card 3.
We find that the card 1 which was placed indoor had lesser pollution in comparison to the two other cards. It consists mainly of fine particles like fine dust particles, animal fur, fine fibers of carpet and clothes, particles of smoke. Whereas the card no 2 which were placed on the outside especially the card on the bus stop was dirtiest. It consists of mainly of larger particle of ash and carbon, soil particles and a few pollen and fungi particles. The card 3 which was placed in the park consists mainly of leaves, pollen particles, fungi, soil particles and few ash and carbon particles. It was dirtier than the card 1 but comparitively cleaner than the card 2. This indicates that the air pollution is greater outside than the indoors. Also we find that there is difference in the pollution level in weekends as compared to the weekdays. The pollution in the weekdays is greater in the card 3 as compared to the weekends. This is probably due to lesser rush of vehicles on the weekends due to off days in the offices and colleges, schools etc.
The card 2 which was placed in the bus stop has the most number of particulate matter collected. Since the card is in continuous exposure of the pollutants resulting from the running vehicles on the road. Also the smoke releasing from the chimneys and the factories also contribute to this pollution.
The cards inside the house was not completely clean because due to petroleum jelly placed on the card it traps the fine particles present inside the house when the air flows due to the windows or the fans like fine fibers of clothes and carpets, fine dust, furs of animals, fine particles of smoke.
