Question

I was given this problem in class today. The professor said the range should be about 3 miles. I'm getting around 10 miles.

Here's the information given

A ball leaves the cannon travelling at 1300 ft/s (thus vsub0=1300)

gravity is represented by -32.17 ft/s^2

It is angled at 45 degrees and is about 1ft off the ground.

What is the range of the cannon ball?

My answer was 52534.4ft solving that t=57.1499 seconds. this is about 10 miles so clearly I am off or the information given is slightly altered.

Please show your work so I can follow the problem. Thanks

Explanation / Answer

Range=u^2/g=1300^2/(32.17)=52533.416 ft.=9.949 miles

you are getting this because at 45 degree the range is maximum for a projectile.the 3 miles your professor saying might be at a different angle.
