Question

5) A force of 100-lb is applied to the lever end as shown. Determine

a) moment of the 100-lb force about O

b) the horizontal force applied at A, which creates the same moment about O

c) the smallest force at A which creates the same moment about O

d) how far from the shaft must a 240-lb vertical force act to create the same moment about the

point O.

A force of 100-lb is applied to the lever end as shown. Determine moment of the 100-lb force about O the horizontal force applied at A, which creates the same moment about O the smallest force at A which creates the same moment about O how far from the shaft must a 240-lb vertical force act to create the same moment about the point O.

Explanation / Answer

(a) 100 * 24 * cos 60

= 2400 * 1/2

= 1200 ib-in

(b) Let the horizontal force about A = x

so,

x * 24 * sin 60 = 1200

x * sin 60 = 50

x = 50 / sin 60

= 57.737 ib-in

(c) The smallest force will be the force perpendicular to the lever(perpendicular distance = 24)

= 1200 / 24

= 50 ib-in

(d) Let the distance be x

240 * x * cos 60 = 1200

x * cos 60 = 5

x = 10 in
