Question
The band structure of three materials P, Q and R are sketched below (not to scale). In P and Q, the Fermi energy (dotted line) lies halfway between the filled valence band (grey box) and unfilled conduction band (white box). R has the same bandgap as Q, but the Fermi energy is much closer to the valence band. Recall that only states within kT of the Fermi energy can contribute strongly to the electronic properties (k is Boltzmann's constant, T is absolute temperature.) What kind of materials are P, Q and R? Estimate, for the materials P, Q and R, at what temperature they might begin to conduct electricity strongly.Explanation / Answer
P : insulator
Q: intrinic semiconductor
R: p type semi conductor
b)
P: require very high teperature for strong conduction . above 1000 degree
Q: it shows some conductivity in room temperature, but for strong conduction nearly 300 degree required . As temepature increses thermally generated carries also increases , so conduction....
R: in room temperature itself it will conduct heavily , because of the presence of p type impurtity
