Question

If a woman is m cycle with the moon, her phases of menstruation would match with the following phases of the moon: Menstruation A. New Moon - A time of cleansing and revaluation Follicular Phase (Time between menstruation and ovulation when an egg is growing) B. M Moon - Peak of mental and emotional creativity Ovulation C. Waning Moon (full moving to new moon. A time of intuitive introspection.) Luteal Phase (body preparing to shed the uterine lining that it does not need since an egg was not fertilized) D. Waxing Moon (New or dark moon moving to full, a time of creative expression a good time for new projects)

Explanation / Answer

The average menstruation cycle of a women is 28 days. It is divided into four phases menstrual cycle, follicular phase, ovulation phase and the luteal phase. During the menstruation phase which begins from the day 1 of menstrual cycle and lasts for 5 days. During this phase the lining of the uterus sheds the lining of its soft tissue and blood vessels in form of the blood which comes from the vagina. Also during this phase we experience the abdominal cramps because of the contraction of the uterine muscles. The follicular phase which also starts from the day 1 but last till day 13 of the mensturation cycle. During the follicular phase a hormone is released by the pitutiary gland which promote the growth of egg cells in the ovary. The egg cells begins to grow in a sac like structure known as follicle and it takes 13 days for a egg to become fully mature. Also during this phase as the egg cell mature the follicle also secretes a hormone which promote the development of lining of soft tissue and blood vessels on the uterus known as endometrium. The pituitary gland secrets a hormone which makes ovary to release the matured egg cell. This egg cell is put into fallopian tube of ovary with the help of cilia of fimbria. This phase is also known as ovulation phase. This is followed by the next phase luteal phase which starts from the day 15 and lasts for 28 days. During this phase the released egg cell remains in the fallopian tube for about 24 hours. If the egg cell is not impregnated by the sperm it is disintegrated.

Similar to the menstrual cycle the average moon cycle is of 29.53 days. The lunar phase is the portion of the moon illuminated by the sun as seen from the observer on earth. The change in lunar phase is due to cyclic motion of moon around the earth. The first phase of the moon is new moon in which the moon is alingned between the sun and the earth. Here we see the portion of the moon which is not sunlit as seen from the earth so we see no moon at all. After this phase the sunlit portion of the moon starts increasing and known as waxing moon which leads to full moon where we see the moon fully illuminated by the sun. After the full moon, the moon enters into its next half cycle and the sunlit portion of the moon starts decreasing and it is said be waning.

Here we can correlate the menstruation phase as the new moon. The follicular phase can be compared with waxing phase of the moon. The ovulation phase which is on day can be compared with the full moon which marks the mid day of the cycle of both moon as well as menstruation. The luteal phase can be compared with the waning phase of the moon.

Mensturation New moon

Follicular phase Waxing moon

Ovulation Full moon
