Question

Compute the capacity in parts / hour of the following lines:

1- A station with three machines operating in parallel with 20 minutes process time at each station ?

2-    A balanced line with single machine stations, all with average processing time of 15 minutes

3-    A four station line with single machine stations, where average processing times are 15, 20, 10, 12

4-    A four station line with multi machine stations, where the number of parallel machines at station 1,2,3 and 4 is 2, 6, 10, and 3 respectively. The average processing times at station 1, 2, 3, 4, are 10, 24, 40, and 18 minutes.

5-    A workstation with 10 machines in parallel, each having a mean process tome of 2.5 hours. There are two 8-hours shifts. Lunch and breaks take 1.25 hours per shift. The machines have a mean time to failure of 100 hours with the mean time to repair of 4 hours. The machines are setup every 10 jobs, and the mean setup time is 3 hours.

6-    A workstation with 10 machines in parallel, each having a mean processing time of 2.5 hours. There are two 8 hours shifts. Lunch and beaks take 1.25 hours per shift. The machines have a mean time to failure of 100 hours with a mean time to repair of 4 hours. The machines are setup every 10 jobs, and the mean setup time is 3 hours. A utilization of 85% is achieved.

Explanation / Answer

a)

n = 3

Processsing time = 20 minutes / machine

Number of parts in one hour per machine = (60 minutes / 20 minutes) = 3

Total capacity of the station = (n * Number of parts in one hour per machine ) = 3 * 3 = 9 parts per hour

b)

Average processing time = 15 min / part

Number of parts per hour = 60min / 15 min = 4

Total capacity of station = 4 parts per hour.

c)

Number of parts per hour for station 1 = 60 min / 15 min = 4

Number of parts per hour for station 2 = 60 min / 20 min = 3

Number of parts per hour for station 3 = 60 min / 10 min = 6

Number of parts per hour for station 4 = 60 min / 12 min = 5

Over all capacity of station = bottleneck station = 3 parts/ per hour = Station 2

d)

Number of parts per hour for station = (Available time(60 minutes) / processing time) * number of parallel units

Number of parts per hour for station 1 = (60 min / 10 min) * 2 = 12

Number of parts per hour for station 2 =( 60 min / 24 min) * 6 = 15

Number of parts per hour for station 3 = (60 min / 40 min) * 10 = 15

Number of parts per hour for station 4 = (60 min / 18 min) * 3 = 10

Over all capacity of station = bottleneck station = 10 parts/ per hour = Station 4
