Answer 9. The study of life as revealed through fossil record is called as paleontology. It is the scientific manner of the studying the life forms of the geologic past that deals with plants as well as animals fossils. It also includes microscopic sized life forms preserved in rocks. Biology is one of the natural sciences that deals with life and living matter, including their origin, evolution, growth and development, functions, reproduction, physical structure and chemical composition etc. Evolution, in simpler terms, means a gradual and continuous developmental process in which one form transforms into a more complex, different and better form. In biological terms, evolution can be termed as a developmental process in which the genetic structure of a population gets changed over the successive generations; leading to the formation of a new species. Punctuated evolution is a theory in evolutionary biology that states that if a species is shown in fossils, its population becomes stable, thus showing minute evolutionary changes for most of its geological history Stratigraphy is a branch of geology in which the relative rank and position of strata and their relation to the geological timescale is studied.
