Question

Design a solar powered oven that meets the following requirements: Uses air to transport heat. Air is circulated via natural convection. Uses 1 m times 4 m aluminum collector angled directly at the sun, with 50% efficiency in absorbing direct sunlight. Oven is made of steel sheet metal and has inside dimensions of 0.5 m times 0.5 m times 0.5 m with 100 mm thick walls that can be filled with insulation. Oven is to be kept at 50 degree C while the air outside the oven is at 20 degree C. Heat exchanger tubing inside oven must leave a whole spatial region that is at least half of the volume of the inside of the oven. As well, one complete side of this region must be accessible by a door to allow inserting and retrieving items in the oven. One meter long tubing is used to pass air to the oven, and another one meter long tube passes air back to the solar collector. The analysis must take into account radiation, convection, and conduction heat transfer as appropriate. Other than the requirements above, complete freedom is given in the design. Look up properties of materials as much as possible. If any necessary parameters cannot be determined, then reasonable assumptions can be made. Note that it may not even be possible to build a solar oven that meets these requirements. If not, which requirements can be changed to make it possible? Due on exam day. Assume it is steady state:

Explanation / Answer

er the flow rate the higher heat transfer, the higher the efficiency, and greater the temp change.
the pay back is the higher the flow rate, the greater the pressure loss, the bigger pump you need.
in alot of real world applications, the acceptable fluid pressure loss, is fixed, so the heat exchanger max. allowable pressure loss is fixed, so the flow rate must be "managed", which means a bigger surface area. so the heat transfer can be obtained, without going over the acceptable fluid pressure loss.
ps. i designed shell and tube and plate heat exchangers for 6 years. termined to ensure:
