You have received funding to film a 2-hour documentary on coral reef within the field of marine biology for the Discovery Channel. First, describe what the main theme of your show will be. 1. Theme : Coral Reefs and the Ocean

What is coral reef : Coral is actually an animal. Coral has a symbiotic relationship with zooxanthellae micro scopic algae which lives on coral. Zooxanthellae assist coral in nutrient production through its photosynthesis activities. These activities provide the coral with carbon compounds for energy, enhance calcification and mediate element nutrient flux. The tissues of coral reefs are actually not the beatiful colors of the coral reefs, but are instead clear white. The corals recieve their coloration from the zooxanthellae living within their tissues. And in return coral provides its algae with a protected environment to live within and supply of carbon dioxide for its photosynthetic process.

There are two types of coral - Hard corals and soft corals, such as sea fans and gorgonians. Only hard corals build reefs.The reef-building corals can form a wide range of shapes. Coral reefs may be branched, table-like or look like massive cups, boulders or knobs. While the majority of coral reefs are found in tropical and sub-tropical water, there are also deep water corals in colder regions.

The most recent report, state of coral reef ecosystem of United state and pacific freely associated states, found that reef habitat adjecent to heavily populated areas tend to experience more intence threats levels related to issues like coastal development and recreational use. The report also says reefs far from human settlement are facing increasing threats, primarily from illegal fishing, marine debris, and climate change related impacts i.e. bleaching dicease and acidification.

Coral reefs ecosystem world-wide have been subject to unprecedented degradation over the past feew decades. Disturbances affecting coral reefs include anthropogenic and natural events. Recent accelerated coral reefs decilne and natural events. Recent accelerated coral reef decline seems to be related mostly overfishing, increased sedimentation and nutrient overloading. Natural disturbances which cause damage to coral reefs are flooding, high and low temperature extremes, El Nino etc.

Finally , I will question experts about majors to be taken to save coral reefs from Coral bleaching and theats to coral reefs by human population.
