Question

History tends to center on great or near-great presidents. Perhaps as much can be learned by examining the administration of a “failed” president, one that historians judge not to have measured up to the office. Among frequently mentioned presidents in this category are James Buchanan, Ulysses Grant, Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, and Jimmy Carter.

Examine the presidential career of one of these presidents and write at least one paragraph in summary. What personal flaws seemed to handicap his administration? Did he have bad advisors? What major mistakes did he make? Why he was originally selected? Could he have succeeded under different circumstances?

Explanation / Answer

Let us consider the 31st President of United States Herbert Hoover from 1929 to 1933. He was a Republican and a great supportor of business class as he thinks that only these class can withdraw America and world from Great depression which was going on in this regime.

He was originally selected as he specified American as the only solution to great depression and him as the only leader who had the ability to decrease unemployment; inflation and other contemporary problems. But the major flaws and mistakes of his administration was Great Depression(central issue) ;Wall street crash; Increased tax like Smoot-Hawley Tariff which sent foreign trade spiraling down; unemployment etc.

For the above problem; there were some advisor of Herbert Hoover responsible because in depressions many suggests that there should be less taxes.

Although he might succeed under different circumstances because the great depression was world problem; not only in America. So there were chances of his success in a different circumstances.
