The role of miR-22 in cancer Description: MicroRNA (miRNA) are post-trancriptional regulators of gene expression. Dysregulated miRNA regulation has been implicated in many human diseases, including cancer. There is great potential in the therapeutic modulation of miRNA as a novel method for cancer treatment. One specific miRNA, miR-22, has received considerable attention in recent years as being implicated in various cancers. However, there still exits controversy regarding its precise function, with some studies highlighting tumour-suppressive functions while others oncogenic functions. Clarifying this is important for developing cancer drugs that will target this miRNA. Method: This project will investigate academic literature which describes the role of miR-22 in cancer. The findings of these studies will be critically evaluated and discussed regarding their validity with emphasis on models used and factors measured, which may have contributed to different results regarding the role of miR-22 in cancer and its functions.

One specific miRNA, miR-22, has received considerable attention in recent years as being implicated in various cancers. However, there still exits controversy regarding its precise function, with some studies highlighting its tumour-suppressive functions while others oncogenic functions. This review is targeted at this controversy and aims to clearly distinguish between various miR-22 models considered and their respective factors which led to its description as a tumor suppressor or an oncogene. This review will further help in directing the miR-22 research towards a more precise path.
